Entry from: Nafplion, Greece Entry Title: "Nafplion and Epidaurus" Entry: "Yesterday was the study abroad excursion to Nafplion and Epidaurus. Nafplion is a beautiful coastal town with a long history. It has been inhabited since ancient times and was controlled by the Franks, the Venetians, and the Turks before being liberated in 1821 by the famous Greek patriot Theodore Kolokotronis. Two years later, Nafplion become the first capital of the modern Greek state. Nafplion has three castles, one of which we visited. Palamidi Castle, the newest of the fortifications, sits on a mountain overlooking the town. Ironically, it's also where Kolokotonis was imprisoned in 1834. We got to go inside his tiny prison cell, which you get to by crawling through a narrow passageway only a few feet high. The town of Nafplion is quiet and pretty with lots of cafes, shops, and narrow residential streets. On the edge of Constitution Square is a historic mosque and one of the oldest coffee shops in Greece. We ate lunch at a taverna - at least five appetizers, chicken souvlaki and lamb steak, and baklava with sliced apples, honey, and cinnamon for dessert. It was all very authentic Greek food and it was delicious. After lunch we went into some shops, including one that only sold komboloi (worry beads). Worry beads are very ...
